This week kicked off a great event at Governors Island, the 4th Annual Governors Island Art Fair presented by 4Heads. Come visit the island on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-6pm through September 25th. Ferries run on the regular from Battery Park and Pier 6 in Brooklyn.

Workaholic, is a 3 story wall-drawing installation I created in building 12, section e.

Workaholic August 2011

Welcome to the office; my office; any Manhattan building you may find yourself in every day. The same images of an elevator, office chair, desk, computer equipment, sit stark and familiar. Here they are transformed. They embody a dream-like form, appearing and dissolving into the architecture of the stairwell. I have an obsession with these ordinary objects which become all-consuming in the monotony of the day job. I also wish to transform them, take them out of their element, dissolving their expected natures. In this building on Governors Island they create a new identity, somewhere between a memory and the present moment, set within a more historic architecture. Painted pipes acknowledge the excitement and engagement of the artist within the present moment. Like the red emergency-color pipes often found in Manhattan office buildings, the pipes call attention to the function of the building and merge the intervention between the drawing and the physical space. The colors here are playful, youthful, reflecting both of the spirit of the artist and of the sea surrounding Governors Island. Here they are not emergencies, but rather fresh reminders of the present moment, the presence of this stairwell and of the artist’s intervention.

Tracing Utopia: My Street, My Office

Photos below of the recent drawing on the left and right side walls of my office space on Broadway in Manhattan. The dissolving, almost melting images represent the street in Brooklyn where I live. The outside of my neighborhood comes inside, inviting and invading into the sterile yellow office space. Images of urban life such as piles of trash awaiting pick up, street lights, safety cones are broken into liquid like shapes and lines. The automobile and motorcycle, both strong symbols of masculinity and achievement are shown equally as broken.

Art is a Gift Part 2: Pieces of Home

This project began a water color painting of my family home in California, which was then cut into 6 8"x10" pieces. Each piece was framed and wrapped in generic brown paper. Each of my four siblings, my parents, and myself opened a gift to reveal a piece to reside in each of our homes which spread from California, Colorado, to Alabama and New York City.

Art is a Gift

The end of this year allowed for an engagement in art-making as gift-making. This year I wished to create some projects which I found to be both personally satisfying in terms of process and interpretation, but also resulted in giftable objects. The first of these involved creating 8 unique t-shirts for each of my nieces and nephews in a project titled Childhood Idols.

Each shirt was hand-drawn using fabric markers and features a cameo-style portrait of each child. The shirts, when worn, reiterate the uniqueness of each individual in both the portrait and the spirit in which it is displayed as wearable art. I believe the child-like experience of making art is one of the most true and often the most pleasurable modes to exist in. It is to appreciate the act of creation in the moment of creating, and to have a pride in the display of your creation. I was proud to share these objects with the most receptive art audience: children.

the object and the negotiation

Art-making is a constant negotiation. Between the world, its movements, this city, a job, family, personal roadblocks. As a child, I looked at the artist as free from restraints, free to create, to make, to live outside of the every day negotiations that seemed to plague the non-creative. I see this as a faulted view now. No one is unrestrained. The artist almost has a more difficult relationship with these factors, as she is constantly clawing out time in the day to create, paving a route that walks between the fantastic creative spirit and the world. I wonder, if given all the time in the world, what kind of art would she create? I believe that it is this relationship with the social order, the daily grind, the negotiations made with time and interest management that make the desire stronger. The work is at times a response or a release from social restraints. It comes from a place that is here and now. The negotiation is as much a part of the art as the object.

Big Girl Job: Ink Drawings in studio

One should be able to seek inspiration from life's daily situations. So I have begun using my time spent in the office as subject matter for a new series of ink drawings, which will hopefully develop into a larger project. Much like the scenes of the suburbs, the American Dream, its loneliness and desires, can be seen in these seemingly mundane objects. The office chair, the computer, the window viewing out onto a bustling New York City street: they are symbols of progress, of success, of having what I've heard it referred to as a "big girl job". The objects, spaces, and technologies utilized to attain this concept of success are utilitarian and serve the purpose of connecting our bodies to our task. They can also seem distant, forgotten, and stark. A few recent explorations below:

Dreams of Love: Brooklyn Studio move-in

Officially moved my art storage out of my bedroom and into a new studio space in Brooklyn! On a 90 degree NYC Saturday, my lovely friends helped move boxes, easel, table, etc down a 4th floor walk up and into an old creeky freight elevator off Grand Street. An exhausting few hours, but totally worth it! Didn't have the heart to actually set the space up properly yet, but I am excited to begin working on new projects and share the space with the talented Josh Bricker. Some photos of the day below:

What ever it takes...

I have heard many artists say to not take on a full time job in order to pursue art post graduate school. Call me old fashioned, but I firmly believe that artists need to find a way to financially support their practice (we can't rely on government funding alone), and a full time job is a good option for some. There is no magic trust fund or sugar daddy in my life, as I'm sure there isn't in yours, and if you want to make it in New York City, well, then it better be "by any means necessary" to support this endeavor. It should be that important, and artists shouldn't be above any methods of supporting themselves (within reason).

I personally feel that a full time job gives me security, and allows me to afford a studio space. Now, the great balance will be in finding the time to physically make the work, and to maintain a healthy level of networking within the arts community. And for some artists, this can be done! For myself, art is not separate from life, and whatever situation I am in work-wise or in life, I believe that art has a place within it. Isn't this the great challenge of the artist, to be a part of the world and also ask questions of it, and create from their own experiences? It is the ability to traverse between both the physical world and the metaphysical which makes us visual philosophers.

Here is a link to the MADE HERE Project featuring a video of artists discussing their day jobs, and what it takes to make their practice a reality. I find myself eye rolling at the last guy in the piece, because if it were just that simple, everyone would be an artist.

Tracing Utopia Wall Drawing #3: Parsons 5th Floor Stairwell

Another wall drawing completed, this time in response to the 5th floor stairwell in the Parsons Fine Arts department. I used the existing architecture, and responded to it with the choice of projection, as well as incorporating outlines of the shadows of the existing objects.

Tracing Utopia: Wall Drawing #2

This second drawing was created in Presentation Space 1 in the Parsons Fine Arts department the first week of March. The installation space is approximately 10' x 20'. This image is a composite of 5 different photographs, altered and fit together to create the feeling of walking down a street in a suburban neighborhood. The horizon line is above the line of sight, providing a floating oasis of dissolving imagery.

Tracing Utopia: Wall Drawing #1

One of my recent projects has been a series of wall drawings, which take place in various locations throughout the Parsons Fine Arts building. Here is the first one, featured in the 25 East Gallery exhibition "In Response to Fundamentalism" in February. The drawings are created with water-based ink applied directly on the wall. The images of suburban neighborhoods are both appearing and dissolving into the space, creating an impermanence and fragility.

Exhibition: In Response to Fundamentalism

A group exhibition, organized by myself and Loretta Lomanto, will open at 25 East Gallery at 25 E13th Street, New York City, this Wednesday February 17th.

Fundamentalism: • noun 1 a form of Protestant Christianity which upholds belief in the strict and literal interpretation of the Bible. 2 the strict maintenance of the ancient or fundamental doctrines of any religion or ideology.

In the history of art making, these select artists have used their works to rebel or respond to fundamentalisms present in their society. The artists chosen for this exhibition have responded to fundamentalism in various ways and methods. Whether at the forefront of their practice, or in response to personal histories, fundamental beliefs are being challenged, reflected upon, with new ideas created. Whether in response to power, familial and societal repression, global responses to cultural suppression, Religion, and limits on sexuality, this exhibit hopes to broaden the Contemporary dialogue of rebellion.

The new year has been rich so far with the beginning of the last semester in the Parsons MFA program. I have been working on several paintings, and working from photos taken in the suburbs of Southern California. You can see the progress in my studio below.

As Michael Auping wrote of Robert Bechtle's photorealistic paintings of California in the 70s, I also wish to "create a slightly incomplete portrait of the American experience. At the same time, there is a certain emptiness in these scenes, a disturbing suggestion of incomplete lives".

My goals in this thesis semester are to pursue this "dark underbelly" in my work, the thread which has always existed, but has lacked strong presence. Like a stranger standing behind me, I can hear it's breathe, I can feel the goosebumps running along my arm, but can't quite grasp the sense of unease.

Fall Semester projects

The following images are from my recent mid-semester review. The goal with this installation was to collect the various elements in my studio from the grass prop, to water-colors on paper, drawing, photographs, and video into an installed environment. Still a work in progress, and much editing needed, but a good exercise in playing with this imagery.

Recently, I've been focusing on depicting images from dreams and from memories of walks taken in the Greenpoint, Brooklyn area.

Dear Family,

I am writing this letter to invite your participation in an art project! The concept, referred to now as "Family Secrets" is meant to explore the things that are left unsaid. Due to perhaps societal or personal restraints on how we open up to those around us (the closest example being the "family unit"), we all have private aspects to our beings. In other words, everyone has a secret!

This idea came to me as part of my ongoing investigations into meaning, psychology, and narrative in my studio practice. This project in no way is meant to exploit or dig into our family dynamics in particular, I am using our family-model as an example to explore larger concepts. I hope to include this project in a more expansive installation project. As of now, this is a beginning stage of the process.

Participation Instruction:

1. Choose your Materials!

select something to write with and something to write on. Can be any materials of your choosing.

2. Disclose your secret!

Write down a "secret" which you have not or would feel uncomfortable sharing with your immediate family. This does not have to include your spouses, as I'm only asking us siblings and mom and dad to participate. The secret can be as personal or impersonal as you want it to be. I just ask that you be completely open and honest in this process.

3. Destroy the evidence!

After writing your "secret", you may slash, burn, crumple, erase, mark-over, or otherwise destroy the paper you wrote on. The secret will remain as such, maintaining anonymity and everyone's personal privacy.

4. Keep the debris!

I would like you to gather the debris, whether it's shredded paper, ashes, etc, and place it in a zip-lock baggie.

I will be displaying the evidence in some form in my studio space, and wish to present this concept to my instructors at the beginning of the school year. This project should only take you a few minutes to complete. The hardest part may be selecting your secret! Please let me know if you have any questions. I know you all have busy schedules, but if it's possible, please postmark by August 20.

Sunday July 19, it was 5:30 in the morning, and Mary and I (yes, Mary and Mary aka "double trouble") arrived at White Columns gallery in Chelsea to await our fate in casting for a new Bravo reality program about artists otherwise known as "Untitled Art Project".

5:30 a.m., we were # 7 & 8 in line...

all of the artsy hopefuls.

tired Mary, running on no sleep.

Long story short, the Maries were not meant for their television debut (yet, anyways) but it was a fun and sleep-deprived experience. I made it through the portfolio review and onto the "judging" room, where a prestigious panel would deem the artist/entertainer fit or not fit for the reality world. I felt rather relieved being rejected, partly because I'm not sure what kind of mold they would have liked me to fit into. What kind of Contemporary Art is viewer friendly for a TV audience? Will the contestants be art-world cliches or actual undiscovered talent from across the U.S.? In any case, I can't wait to see the show when it debuts.. perhaps one of those many freaks in line will be part of the "lucky 13".
